Former New Jersey Superior Court – Appellate Division judge and Rutgers alum Kay Walcott-Henderson joined the Rutgers Office of the General Counsel in July 2026 after nearly ten years of service on the bench. As Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel – Litigation and General University Affairs, she will provide legal and strategic advice on the University’s litigation portfolio.
Appointed to the Superior Court in Mercer County in November 2016, Walcott-Henderson presided over civil and family law matters. In 2022, she became the general equity judge, and in 2023, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner elevated her to the Appellate Division, where she authored over 150 opinions.
Prior to her judicial appointment, she held several senior leadership roles in New Jersey state government, including Supervising Judge of Workers' Compensation, Assistant Counsel to Governor Jon Corzine, Chief of Staff in the Department of State, General Counsel to the Speaker of the General Assembly, and Assistant Prosecutor. These diverse leadership positions strengthened her ability to analyze complex legal issues, manage high-profile matters, and consistently deliver exceptional work product under demanding deadlines.
Walcott-Henderson earned her Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University and her Juris Doctor from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law.
